History of Kargil
The interesting history associated with Kargil makes it more tempting for the tourists. Major part of the present day Kargil town was once known as Purig, which also included the Suru valley, Pashkum, Shaghar Chiktan, Mulbek and Bodh Kharbu. It is believed that human settlement began here late in 500 - 0 BC. Dards of the several small valleys of Gilgit were perhaps the first to settle in this incredibly cold region - Kargil.During the same period, some people also migrated to Purig from the Indian Plains. They rapidly assimilated with Dard community. Later on, communities like Seergaya, Dastak Paldan, Guru Urgyan Padma and Lama Naropar form Kashmir also migrated to this cold hilly region. Population increased more when some humans of Gangasug and Teesug communities from Leh chose Kargil as their home town.
