Karsha Trek (The Frozen Zanskar River Trek)

is a highly adventurous journey and gives the feeling of true exploration.
In fact only a handful of Westerners have ever completed the journey.
Temperatures at night could fall below minus 30 Degree Celcius. There is a
good chance of seeing Ibex and Blue Sheep on our way. If we are really
lucky, we could spot a Winter Fox or a Snow Leopard. The round trip is
approximately 140 miles long, and is used in mid winter by Ladakhi postmen
to take mail from Leh to Padum. Other hardy Zanskaris use it as a trade
route in winter and call it 'the Chadar' or frozen blanket. Any person
thinking of joining this unique adventure must be fully prepared to tough
camping condition, some nights we may sleep in caves and in Zanskar we may
sleep on the flat roofs of the houses. A head for heights may be useful and
certainly a patient, flexible attitude will be an asset as anything could
happen and probably will.
Day 01:
Arrive Delhi. Met upon and transfered to Hotel.
Day 02:
Fly Delhi/Leh. Early morning flight to Leh, the capital of Ladakh.
Day 03 & 04:
Leh. Sightseeing. Overnight hotel.
Day O5:
Leh- Sumdah Do- Drive. Overnight camp.
Day 06:
Trek up the frozen river. For the next five days we trek up the Frozen
River through gorges and deep valleys. There are a number of choices for
camp sites and therefore during this time we can make our itinerary as
flexible as we like. There are also many caves (Bawo) which can be used for
camping. The names of these camping places are listed below. Trek Chilling
to Dakmar Bawo. Camp.
Day 07:
Trek Dakmar Bawo to Tib Bawo Camp.
Day 08:
Trek Tib Bawo to Nayektse Bawo Camp.
Day 09:
Trek Nayektse Bawo to Wamay Bawo camp.
Day 10:
Wamay Bawo to Zangla village. Stay in a village house.
Day 11:
Trek Zangla to Tondey.
Day 12:
Trek Tondey to Padum.
Day 13:
At leisure in Padum.
Day 14 to 19:
Return trek. The return trek is quicker and easier, Drive to Leh. Overnight
in hotel.
Day 20:
Fly to Delhi. Overnight in hotel.
Day 21:
Late night transfer to I.G. International Airport.
Day 22:
Fly home.
