Location
Perched amidst the serene and calm locales, Likir Monastery is one of the highly revered shrine for Buddhists. It is situated on a low hill, at a distance of 52 km from the main town of Leh. Likir monastery is also popularly known as Klu-kkhyil, which means water spirits. It is believed that the monastery is the first in Ladakh to have been constructed by Tibetan monks.Foundation
The original structure of monastery was ruined by a fire. The present building was re-constructed in the 18th century and belongs to the Gelukpa sect. More than 120 monks are the residents of the Gompa.
Highlights of Likir Monastery
There is a assembly hall or Dukhang on the right side of the courtyard. Dukhang consists of six rows seats for Buddhist monks. The walls are enhanced with some impressive thankas hangings. Daily prayers are held by Lamas in the assembly hall. Dukhang also houses a throne which is reserved for the head Lama of Likir monastery. Varandah entrance is beautifully painted depicting the Guardians of the Four Directions on the left side and Wheel of Life Mandala held by Yama on the right side.Treasures of Likir Monastery
Many antiques associated with Buddhism are displayed in the Likir monastery. The charm of 25 m high statue of Maitreyi Buddha leaves the visitors surprised. Likir monastery houses fine collection of wall paintings depicting thirty-five compassionate Buddhas and sixteen Arhats. The museum inside the monastery complex showcases numerous Tibetan artifacts, which are about few hundred years old.
