Sankar Gompa is another eye-catching attractions of Ladakh. The monastery is located just 3 km from the town of Leh. Sankar gompa belongs to the Gelukpa (Yellow Hat Sect) and serves as an official residence of head of Gelukpa Sect in Ladakh. He is known as The Kushok Bakul.Foundation
Sankar Gompa was founded by first incarnation of Skyabje Bakula. As more than 25 monks are permanent residents of the monastery, therefore restricted timings are set for the visitors. It is opened for the public from 7 to 10 am and from 5 to 7 am.
Highlights of Sankar Gompa
The main entrance of varandah fascinates the visitors for its amazing decorations. The left wall of varandah is enhanced with a Wheel of Life, held by Yama. Another section to admire is the Dukhang, adorned with paintings of Guardian of the Four Directions. It also boasts of a throne reserved for the head monk of monastery.Treasures of Sankar Gompa
This Buddhist shrine features some fabulous collection of exquisite paintings and murals of the Guardian divinities of the Four Quarters of Heaven, the Old Man of Longevity, the Wheel of Life and Sakyamuni Buddha with his sixteen sages and thirty-five benevolent Buddhas. It also houses awesome statue of Avalokiteshwara Padmahari with 1,000 heads and arms and Yamantaka (God of Death). Sankar Gompa also treasures Kanshur, 108 volumes of Buddha's teaching and idols of three Buddhas Sakyamuni, the Present Buddha and Maitreya (Future Buddha).
